Commands

There are two kinds of command. Slash commands are typed in your assistant’s chat or terminal, and they do the work. Palette commands are run from the VS Code command palette, and most of them send a slash command for you.

Some assistants spell slash commands with dashes, such as /speckit-companion-plan. speckit.commandFormat in Configuration controls which form SpecKit Companion sends.

Each workflow has its own family. Both stay installed, and a spec uses the one it was created with.

Step Command Use it when
Constitution /speckit.constitution The project has no ground rules yet
Specify /speckit.specify
/speckit.companion.specify
You have an idea. The Companion one also sizes the change.
Plan /speckit.plan
/speckit.companion.plan
The spec is ready and you want the design
Tasks /speckit.tasks
/speckit.companion.tasks
The plan is ready and you want a task list
Implement /speckit.implement
/speckit.companion.implement
The tasks are ready and you want them built
Converge /speckit.converge Implement finished and you want the code checked against the spec
Mark complete /speckit.companion.mark-complete The work is finished and you want to close the spec. In the Spec Kit workflow, press Mark Completed.
Auto /speckit.companion.auto You want every step run for you, with no pauses. Companion only.

Where a step has two commands, the first belongs to the Spec Kit workflow and the second to SpecKit Companion.

Spec Kit also has /speckit.clarify, /speckit.checklist, /speckit.analyze and /speckit.taskstoissues. The viewer offers them under Other actions.

These come from the Companion Spec Kit extension. Track progress covers them.

Command Use it when
/speckit.companion.status You want to know the current step and what to do next
/speckit.companion.resume A run stopped and you want to continue where it left off
/speckit.companion.doctor A run looks wrong and you want a health report

All seven do nothing until living specs are turned on.

Command What it does
/speckit.companion.living-adopt Drafts a living spec for a code area you name, and registers it
/speckit.companion.living-sync Updates every affected living spec from your current changes
/speckit.companion.living-drift Lists source files changed since each spec was last committed
/speckit.companion.living-coverage Reports which requirements have a test mapped
/speckit.companion.living-show Prints a requirement list, one requirement, or the requirements for one file
/speckit.companion.living-validate Checks the shape of living specs and of a feature spec’s deltas
/speckit.companion.living-move Moves a living spec between the central folder and a place beside its code

You do not type these. Spec Kit runs them around its own commands, and they write the run record.

Command Runs Records
speckit.companion.after-specify After specify Specify finished
speckit.companion.after-plan After plan Plan finished
speckit.companion.after-tasks After tasks Tasks finished
speckit.companion.after-implement After implement Each finished task, and implement finished once every task is checked
speckit.companion.before-converge Before converge Converge started. The status does not change.
speckit.companion.after-converge After converge Converge finished. The status does not change.

speckit.companion.classify is also not typed. The workflow runs it to size a change.

All of these are under the SpecKit category.
